Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Disability Studies (GIS-DS)
The Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Disability Studies (GIS-DS) provides graduate students at The Ohio State University the opportunity to pursue a coherent specialization in Disability Studies in addition to their concentrated study within a major field. Find out more about the GIS-DS by reading the original GIS-DS program proposal, or the program requirements below.
GIS-DS Requirements
The GIS-DS requires 20-23 credit hours of course work (minimum of 20 hours, minimum of 4 different courses). Graduate students who wish to complete the GIS-DS should contact the coordinators to determine a course of study.
Required Core Coursework (6 Hours)
- ASC 700: Introduction to Graduate Study in Disability Studies (5 hours)
- ASC 900: Disability Studies Research Forum (minimum 1 credit hour, maximum of 4 credit hours).
Additional Coursework (14-17 hours)
In addition to the required coursework, GIS-DS students must complete 14-17 credit hours of Disability Studies courses that compliment their area of study. At least 14 hours must be taken outside the student’s home department. Courses taken inside the students home department must be at the 600-level and above. Courses taken outside the students home department may be taken at the 500-level and above; however, no more than 5 hours of 500-level coursework can be applied toward the GIS-DS. No more than 2 courses may be taken from a single department. No more than 1 course may be an American Sign Language course. A maximum of 4 hours of ASC 800 (Disability Studies Workshop) can be applied toward the GIS-DS. Note: Courses that say “special topics” are variable topics. To ensure that the course content during any given quarter will focus on disability studies and count toward the GIS-DS, students need to consult with a disability studies coordinator.
